    1. A free ebook (pdf) which you can download at reasonandpersuasion. This is a fantastic introduction to Plato. The three dialogues included are "Euthyphro," "Meno," and Book I of The Republic. The introduction mentions some concepts from later parts of The Republic that I haven’t read yet, like Plato’s Theory of Forms:"Plato thinks the things around us in the world we live in — men, women, chairs, rocks, trees, cows, stars in the sky — are like so many illustrations in a geometry text. As [...]

    2. Very little in terms of explaining the actual dialogues, uses a lot of convoluted reasoning to make the texts harder than what it is. Doesn't get to the point and has a lot of fluff to confuse you. Even if free, I would not recommend others to read it. Try out other philosophy books if you want to learn about philosophers of the past.

    3. This book makes me greatly dislike philosophy. I understand the need to debate meanings and discuss alternative definitions. But this guy drags out his point, often drawing conclusions that seem to come out of nowhere. The parts directly related to Plato's writing was the only interesting aspect of the book.

    4. If you follow me on Google+, you might know that I take Coursera courses occasionally. One course which I took (and really really enjoyed) was Reason and Persuasion: Three Dialogues by Plato held by the National University of Singapore (NUS).I took the course because Plato and Socrates influenced so much of Western philosophy. There's a quote by Alfred North Whitehead which states:The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footn [...]

    5. This book contained Plato's dialogues (presented via the mouthpiece of Socrates) Euthyphro, Meno, and book one of the Republic. He deals with important questions like "What is justice?" and "Is something moral because it is commanded by God ('the gods' according to Plato)or is it commanded by God because it is moral?", a classic dilemma answered in Christian theology by various renderings of the Divine Command theory, put forth by Augustine and Calvin, among others. There is some truth mixed in w [...]

    6. I very much recommend 'Reason and Persuasion'. A very solid foundation for anyone to begin reading Plato and learning about philosophy, it is the standard textbook for the Coursera course on those three dialogues by Plato (which I also very much recommend). Aside from presenting the three dialogues, Holbo provides support chapters in which he analyses and explains much of the history and customs behind it. While the dialogues alone are very much fascinating in raising questions and challenging o [...]

    7. This books gave nice insight into some areas of Plato which I would have not noticed otherwise. It explains some points which were common sense to Greeks when Plato wrote it, but now are just historical curiosities for us.If you don't know what miasma is, where was the dockyard in Athens, why astronomy is considered fundamental science in Plato's time (hint: astronomy of ancient Greeks was not our modern astronomy) then this book will shed some additional light to Plato.
